Solid waste management company Island Waste Carriers is celebrating 15 years equipping the construction, residential and commercial community with waste management education and service.
The company, locally known as IWC, started in 2004 with one grapple truck and 10 dumpsters, hauling its first load for Pro-Builders site in Red Bay. IWC later joined forces with MC Restoration assisting in the clean-up of Grand Cayman in the wake of 2004’s Hurricane Ivan, which caused $2.4 billion in damages.
Not long after that, the company landed its first government contract – to relocate the Bodden Town temporary dump site so that hurricane debris could be processed and disposed of properly.
Today, IWC has 15 employees, boasts a fleet of 15 trucks and hundreds of containers, and is located on a 2-acre property at 19E33 Sparkys Drive, Industrial Park.
“There have been so many milestones that we are proud to have accomplished as the focused and passionate team that we are, and thank the community for entrusting us with such a rewarding challenge,” said IWC Managing Director Jason Brown in a press release.
In 2014, Brown partnered with Guernsey Recycling Group to start sister company Island Recycling Ltd., which handles the buying, processing, export and recycling of non-ferrous metals. The company was also responsible for recycling 670,000 shredded tyres during a 16‑month period under a government recycling project in 2016.
